Hi Heidi :) I believe it does give a higher chance of throwing pinto no matter what color the base and the spot is. Pinto by definition with horses is white and another color, also reffered to as pai…

I see you are from enumclaw. Our reproductive vet, Dr. Acton, is about 3.5 hrs away. A bit of a drive but not too bad. Seeing her would be a great idea. Dr. Acton can be found at Woodburn Veterinary Clinic in Woodburn, Oregon. She however didn't do…

Hey Laura, take a breath dear. Don't let anyone freak you out. What you are describing is a congenital (congenital just means born with it but not always genetic) anomalie that can be fixed pretty easily. If it is just the opening to the vaginal tha…

As far as processing the fiber, I would not worry too much about a spot in the neck if that's all it is. As long as it is not in the blanket you are good to go. and if you wish to use the neck fiber, just simply pluck out the spot. However, I would…

Hi Pam! First off, Congratulations! The only thing I could think of would be a strange blood clot, but a picture would help a lot. Blood clots can turn brown and kinda spongey-like after a while. I've seen that on a few placentas that have been out…

Tell us more about yourself!
My name is Jamie. I don't have a farm of my own. I work at Northwest Alpacas. I have been working there for 6 years as the herd health manager. In addition to working at Northwest Alpacas, I work at Islay Hills Alpacas, North Plains Alpacas, Alpacas at Dairy Creek, and occasionally help out at Stoneberg Alpacas. I also farmsit for Alan Cousill and Jude Anderson at Pucara International Alpacas and for Pat Martin at Heritage Alpacas. I have also worked on a weekly basis under the tutelage of Dr. Paul L. Jones of Woodburn Veterinary Clinic.

I am a single mom of one. I have a son named, Isaiah, he turned 1 on September 7th. I can't believe how fast time flies!

When I am not working, I am in school full time. Studying to become a Certified Veterinary Technician. Ultimately I want to become a Large Animal Veterinarian specializing in Camelids. Vet Tech degree is just something to help me provide for my son a little better until I can finish vet school in the future.

I have acquired 6 alpacas of my own. Someday, I will have my own farm. Hopefully with 200+ alpacas.

This made me cry...

Word for word from Dr. Jones, Veterinarian of the year. Recommendation to put with my resume...

"In 35 years of veterinary practice, I have never worked with anyone that has the animal skills of Jamie. She has the "eye", the instinct, power of observation and gift of knowing the status of animal well-being. This remarkable ability has led to early diagnosis and successful treatment of many animals. She is very competent, thorough, and compliant in giving treatments to animals under my supervisi… Continue

Trouble at around midnight

I think my son had a night terror. Screamed for 20 minutes and nothing I did soothed him. Sometimes he wakes up crying, but as soon as I pick him up and rock him he is ok. This time he kept screamin and screamin and it was like he wasn't even awake for most of it...It was rather frightening for me as well. Is it possible that a 1 year old can have a night terror??? They say that older children tend to have them, not kids my son's age.

Internal Parasites

I always like to hear how other breeders de-worm even though we have our own protocol. Listening and sharing experiences with other breeders, in my opinion, is crucial for finding better ways to care for our alpacas as a whole. After all, we all love our alpacas and we all want to maintain healthy herds for the benefit of the animal and our businesses. That is why I will share how I treat alpacas for parasite infestations and I would love to hear what you do differently.

From my experience with… Continue

That is a cria from a girl out of Tequila! Ibought the girl bred, and her female cria from a gal in Idaho, in 2008. She had a boy that year and this boy in 09 from a free breed back to her white stud, Nimbus. Only problem, he has never grown , I thought maybe thyroid? Shame, he is just wonderful, huh?

Hey Jamie, was thinking about that costume idea. Why couldn't you felt some fleece and then sew it into an Alpaca? That could be really fun to try to do.

Hopefully Fantasia will be ok - she spent 10 days in the hospital - we brought her home yesterday. Of course she's pretty inflamed but hopefully she'll be ok. We'll have her checked in a couple weeks to see if there's scarring or if she might be able to breed again. Keep you fingers crossed. It was a very hard delivery. A girl, too - Canadar's.

RE: Truva - a healthy 14.2 pound female - dark fawn I would say, with a small white patch on her eyebrows and on the front of each of her front feet. She's healthy and growing. Had to assist the birth a bit - elbows were locked - Truva is doing fine. A very attentive mom. Not much milk at first - so we supplemented with an herbal mixture and now I think she's doing ok - cria is putting on weight. I'll post a pic if I can figure out how! Named her Zoe. Thanks for checking on the panacur paste. Promise - Duchess and Daphne still with strongyles
