USALPACA FIBER ALLIANCE

We are an alliance of fiber growers with the common goal of creating a fiber market. Instead of collecting fiber and then developing the market, we are developing the market first. We plan on buying your fiber at fair market prices or slightly above.

Hi Robin - My sugestion to you would be to join as many knitting and spinning groups on Long Island as possible. That way you can promote the alpaca yarn made from your animals to the local cottage market of knitters and spinners. Also may be have an artical on your farm put in the local news paper to promote the animals on your farm, your knitting and the benafits of the alpaca fleece.

I am in the alpaca business just over a year. Being on Long Island, I am trying desperately to figure out the best way to move forward. Being an avid knitter, the fiber was what drew me to the animals. Now, I am fully invested in making a go of alpaca farming...no matter what form that needs to take! I would love to hear anyone's ideas on how to educate the New York/Long Island market to the value of alpacas and alpaca fiber.

I started spinning as a 'hobby' about 1 1/2 yrs ago. It turned into a business before I could think. I was given alpaca fiber and then acquired 4 pregnant females so now have 8 alpaca and four on the way. I make 100% hand processed, 2-ply alpaca yarn in many fun plies and blends. Its the best!!!!

We currently promote alpacas in our local community by offering our fiber to local crafters for felting or spinning. I also handspin our fiber and offer the yarn for sale in both natural and custom dyed colors. While we do live in New England we have not participated in the New England Fiber Pool as of yet since we are still very small and want to offer products made from the fiber that our individual animals produced. As we grow however i'm excited to see organizations such as this developing the US market for alpaca fiber. I know alot of farms just sit on their fiber not sure what to do with it.
